Vanpayar thoran





Ingredients

  • Red Gram (vanpayar) - 1 cup
  • Green Chili - 1 no
  • Salt - To Taste
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 pinch
  • Chili Powder - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 spring
  • Water - 1/2 cup

 To grind (to coarse)

  • Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Pearl onion(kunjulli) - 2 nos
  • Jeera (cumin) - 1 pinch
  • Salt  - 1 pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Method
----------

  1.  Soak Vanpayar overnight with enough water
  2. Cook soaked payar with water, salt, chilli,  turmeric, chilli powder for 4 whistles/ until done.
  3. When the pressure is released, open the lid and drain the water.
  4. In a pan add oil.Splutter  mustard seeds followed by red chilli and curry leaves.
  5. Add cooked payar and saute for 2 mins
  6. Add grounded coconut mixture and cook for 2 more mins.
  7. Switch off and add 1 tsp oil and curry leaves at the top.It enhances the taste.
  8. Serve hot with  puttu, rice or kanji.
