Fish Masala






Ingredients

  • Fish- 250 gm (Thick Fleshed Fish)
  • Onion - 2 medium (finely chopped)
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece(finely chopped)
  • Garlic - 4 cloves(finely chopped)
  • Green Chilli - 4 (finely chopped)
  • Tomato Puree - 1/4 cup
  • Tamarind - 1 small gooseberry size
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 2 1/2 tbsp
  • Coriander powder - 2 tbsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry Leaves
  • Coriander Leaves
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Oil 


To marinate

  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder- 1 tsp 
  • Ginger garlic paste -1/2 tsp
  • Salt -to taste
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp



Method

  1. Clean and cut fish to medium sized pieces.
  2. Marinate the fish with the ingredients given above and keep aside for at-least 20 minutes.
  3. Soak tamarind in 1/4 cup water and mix well. Drain and keep the juice reserved.
  4. In a pan add oil and lightly fry the fish. It  need not be fully cooked. When both sides are lightly brown drain and keep aside.
  5. In the same oil add chopped ginger , garlic and curry leaves.
  6. Saute till a nice aroma comes.
  7. Add finely chopped onions and saute till light brown.
  8. Add all curry powders and mix well.
  9. Add tomato puree, tamarind juice and salt and mix well.
  10. Cover and cook for 5 mins.
  11. Add fried fish pieces and gently mix. Take care not to break the fish pieces.
  12. Add water. Close  the lid and cook till the gravy thickens.
  13. Add  freshly chopped coriander and curry leaves and mix well.
  14. Serve with any rice, pulav, roti, appam etc.
