Kappanga (Raw Papaya) Sambar






Ingredients
----------------
  • Toor dal - 1/4 cup
  • Raw Pappaya cubed - 1 cup
  • Pearl onion - 1/2 cup
  • Tomato -1/2 diced
  • Tamarind pulp -1tbsp
  • Jaggery/ sugar  -1 pinch
  • Asafoetida - 1 small piece
  • Turmeric Powder -1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander powder- 1 /2 tsp
  • Sambar Powder - 11/2tsp
  • Water - 1 cup

To Splutter
-----------------
  • Mustard Seeds -  1/4 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Dried Red chilli -2
  • Curry Leaves - few
  • Asafoetida/Hing - 1 pinch
  • Red chilli powder  - 1/4 tsp

Method for making sambar
---------------------------------
  1. In a pressure cooker, add dal, water,salt ,turmeric powder and red chilli powder,asafoetida and cook until done..
  2. When the pressure is released , add diced pappaya, onion and tomato. Cook for another 1 whistle.
  3. Open lid after done. Add tamarind pulp and water if required and bring to boil.
  4. Add the sambar powder to boiling mixture.
  5. Add 1  pinch jaggery /sugar and mix well.
  6. In a heated pan, add oil . Splutter the ingredients  given in the list "to splutter".
  7. Pour it over the sambar.
